About us
Our story
Our story begins with Susheela Daniel, hailing from Finland, Europe, who back in 2017 opened her heart to the suffering of street dogs in India. In January 2017 she experienced a life-changing moment when she adopted her first-ever street dog, Yazhini. This marked the beginning of her journey to rescue and care for injured and sick animals.
Recognizing the urgent need for proper transportation, Susheela and her friends raised funds in 2018 to purchase a second-hand ambulance. This invaluable vehicle allowed them to swiftly transport animals from the village to the hospital. Sadly, the ambulance is no longer operational, but their spirit remains undeterred.
After sporadic rescue work and fundraising for medical treatments during her visits to India, Susheela made the momentous decision to permanently move there in 2020. With a few street dogs under her care who could not survive on the unforgiving streets, she wholeheartedly dedicated herself to full-time rescue and rehabilitation work. She realized that it was her calling to relinquish her life in Europe in order to provide a lifeline for these vulnerable creatures.
The feeding journey began with Susheela cooking and providing daily meals for her 20 village dogs. She diligently tended to their illnesses and injuries, ensuring they received the necessary medical attention. She also championed spaying, neutering, and vaccinating them against rabies and other life-threatening diseases commonly found among street dogs.
Thanks to the unwavering support of her family and friends, Susheela successfully rescued numerous dogs, finding them loving permanent homes. In a remarkable turn of events, four lucky dogs were even adopted internationally, finding their forever families in Europe. Out of her own pocket, Susheela hired additional team members to assist with daily feeding and rescue operations. One such team member, Samuel from Mahabalipuram, faithfully provides nutritious plant-based meals to approximately 45 street dogs each day, closely monitoring their well-being and promptly reporting any concerns to Susheela. Meanwhile, in Chennai, Susheela and her team collaborate with low-income neighborhoods, empowering the locals to better care for street dogs and providing crucial treatment to those in need.
In the early months of 2023, Yazhini Love and Rescue was officially registered as a trust, ensuring the continuation of the vital work. Through this trust, Susheela and her dedicated team are committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, feeding, adopting, treating, and caring for street dogs in Mahabalipuram and Chennai. Their approach is rooted in sustainability and ethics, with compassion and respect serving as the guiding principles in every endeavor.
Now you too have the opportunity to be a part of this inspiring journey. By contributing to Yazhini Love and Rescue, you become an agent of change, offering hope and support to these deserving street dogs. Your donation will enable the trust to expand its reach, save more lives, and continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of these precious creatures. Together, let us create a brighter future for street dogs, where love and compassion triumph over adversity.
Our mission & vision
Our Mission Statement
Our mission is to keep the 45 street dogs under our care in Mahabalipuram well fed and healthy through compassionate feeding and consistent and timely medical care throughout the year. Apart from this we strive to regularly rescue, rehabilitate, sterilize, vaccinate and find homes for a small number of street dogs that we come across in Mahabalipuram and Chennai.
Our vision
A world where street animals are embraced with utmost respect, and boundless love, where every street animal receives timely help and care.
Our core values
Compassion
At Yazhini Love & Rescue, we believe that every animal deserves to be treated with kindness, empathy, and respect. Compassion is at the heart of everything we do, from feeding and caring for street dogs to finding them loving homes. We strive to create a world where animals are not seen as disposable objects, but rather as sentient beings who feel pain, joy, and love just like we do. We strive to always uphold a compassionate approach when rescuing and rehabilitating animals. We believe in treating each animal as a unique individual, rather than just a number to report in our statistics.
Dedication
Our work at Yazhini Love & Rescue requires a tremendous amount of dedication and commitment. We are committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, feeding, and caring for street dogs in a sustainable and ethical way. We do not give up on a street dog that we have committed to caring for, no matter how sick or injured they may be. We recongize that we can’t save all the animals but the ones that get the privilege of helping, we are completely dedicated to.
Ethical treatment of animals
We believe in treating all animals with respect and kindness. For the street dogs we feed, we provide warm plant-based meals to ensure they are well-nourished without contributing to the harm or killing of other animals for food. By choosing a plant-based diet, we can help promote compassion and respect for all animals, not just dogs.
